The Oscar Nominations and Predictions

The Oscar nominations are out and we have had a couple of days to mull them over. There have been no surprise nominations and a lot of the people who were nominated last year are nominated this year.

The Oscar nominations seem to follow a predictable pattern where big stars such as Cate Blanchette, Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprrio are always nominated. You could probably also add Jennifer Lawrence to the list of people nominated every year, she has been nominated every other year for okay performances in okay films, yes people Silver Linings Playbook was less than okay.

What is interesting about this year is that Meryl Streep isn’t nominated and there have been no nominations of people of colour in the actor and actress categories. The Meryl Streep non-nomination can be explained as she has been nominated 18 times and has already won 3 times so they probably needed to change things up, but as for the people of colour thing it seems out of character for the academy.  The Academy usually follows the pattern of nominating at least one person above retirement age and at least one or two people of colour, this is just to keep us liberals quite.

This year the above retirement age nomination goes to Charlotte Rampling for her performance in 45 Years, but there are no nominations for people of colour or even films with people of colour in them except maybe for the few foreign language films and the original screenplay nomination for Straight Outta Compton. Interesting questions arise like if there were any good movies with people of colour in them this year? But those are too complicated to answer in this blog post, so I will direct you to my article on Why Diversity on our screens is important, while I awkwardly change the subject.

I’ve always had a sixth sense when it comes to predicting who will win the Oscar even though I may not have watched all the films. I have faith in my powers as my dad always said the force was strong within in me.

Check out the list below for the list of nominations and my predictions:
